Shade Haven part of compassionate cattle care at High Life Ranch
David Castillo, owner of High Life Ranch in Huntsville, Utah, is on a mission to raise some of the finest beef in the world. For this rancher and Shade Haven owner, providing premium quality beef begins with superior care of his cattle.
“From the time the cattle are born through the end of their lives, we treat them in a loving, respectful manner. We try to meet the basic needs of our animals at a high level. The end result – our beef and our breeding stock – speaks for itself,” says Castillo.
Since 2019, Castillo has worked alongside his wife, Jenny, and their two children, Zayah and Lennix, to grow High Life Ranch into a thriving grass-fed operation. Before purchasing the ranch, Castillo competed professionally in the Mixed Martial Arts. The transition from fighter to farmer offered a quieter, healthier lifestyle for his family. “We wanted more room and fresh air,” he recalls. “We always loved beef, so we planted pastures, put up fencing, installed irrigation and started out with a couple of cows. Then we discovered Highland cattle and fell in love with the breed.”
A need for shade
Highland cattle are known for their gentle nature, excellent maternal instincts, quality beef and woolly appearance. With origins dating back to 6th century Scotland, the Highland’s thick, double-layered coat helps them thrive in colder climates, but Utah’s hot summers present a challenge. Castillo recognized early on that providing shade was essential for the health and productivity of his herd.
“They do shed out in summer, but not enough. Highlands need shade. If given the proper amount of shade, they are more efficient and put on more weight.” explains Castillo.
Initially, Castillo built his own shade structures, but as the number of cattle grew, so did the need for additional shade. That led to the purchase of a Shade Haven mobile shade system, a decision he does not regret. “The Shade Haven is a very well-thought-out piece of equipment. It’s well-built, sets up quickly, and can withstand wind.”
Stress-free grazing
Castillo’s SH1200 mobile shade system does more than provide shade. Equipped with a fly control oiler/scratcher, it’s a tool for overall cattle comfort. “Wherever the Shade Haven is, that’s where the cattle are,” says Castillo.
About 100-head of cattle rotationally graze through the paddocks at High Life Ranch. Adhering to the philosophy of low stress cattle care, Castillo uses the Shade Haven as a signal that it’s time to move. “We don’t have to use fear or aggression to get them to move. We just hook the Shade Haven up to the side-by-side, and the cattle willingly follow.”
Compassion you can taste
High Life Ranch is committed to regenerative, compassionate farming practices. Though Highland cattle take longer to mature – often twice that of other breeds – the Castillo family doesn’t mind the extra time needed to care for their cattle. Their efforts, combined with the slow growth of the cattle, result in lean, flavorful, protein-rich beef known for its marbling and tenderness.
