A Veterinarian’s Perspective on Shade

Retired Veterinarian James Coker understands how critical shade is to livestock health and performance. In spring 2025, he added a SH600 mobile shade system to his Red Angus grazing operation in Lake City, South Carolina. After one full grazing season, he calls the Shade Haven a “great investment.”

“I can’t say enough positive things about the Shade Haven,” says Coker. “It’s sturdy, easy to move, and easy to set up.”

Once the SH600 was in the pasture, the cattle quickly learned where to go when the temperatures rose. “We have stretches of intense summer heat here in the Southeast,” Coker explains. “Shade is vital to cattle welfare.”

Comfortable Cattle. Better Grazing.

By positioning the Shade Haven on higher ground in his pasture, Coker maximized both shade and airflow – allowing his cattle to cool off during peak heat and then return to grazing. The result: more grazing time and improved herd condition.

“With the Shade Haven the cattle maintained their body condition throughout the grazing season,” Coker confirms.

To further protect his herd, Coker added the Fly Control Oiler/Scratcher to his SH600. His fly management strategy includes using Dr. Sarah’s Shoo Fly natural repellent in the oiler along with pasture hygiene and regularly moving the Shade Haven.

“Once you get behind on flies, it’s really difficult,” notes Coker, who is already thinking about his 2026 fly management plan.

After a full grazing season, the Shade Haven has earned a permanent place in Coker’s operation.  “It has been a very smart addition to my farm,” he says. “When I expand, I’ll definitely be in the market for another one.”
